TallyPrime Silver: Price, Features & Who Should Buy It

TallyPrime Silver is the single-user edition of Tally’s accounting software. You install it on one computer, and only one computer can use the licence at a time. Gold, the next edition up, has the same feature set, so Silver gives up nothing in accounting, GST or inventory. What you give up is the ability to have several people working on the data at once.

It’s easy to assume Silver is a lighter product and to pay three times as much for a Gold licence you don’t need. It’s just as easy to buy Silver for a team and discover in the first week that it can’t be shared. Getting this one decision right saves money and a fair amount of irritation.

This guide covers what Silver includes, what it costs in India on lifetime and rental plans, how yearly TSS renewals work, how it compares with Gold, and who it suits. Prices are taken from Tally’s own pages as of July 2026. Tally revises them from time to time, so confirm the current figure before you pay.

What is TallyPrime Silver?

TallyPrime Silver is the one-computer licence for TallyPrime, the business management software from Tally Solutions. It handles accounting, invoicing, inventory, GST, banking and payroll in a single Windows application, and Tally describes it as the usual starting point when TallyPrime is needed on one computer.

Typical Silver users are sole proprietors, small retailers and traders, consultants, and firms where one person looks after all the bookkeeping. Some chartered accountants use it too, working on one client’s books at a time from a single workstation.

TallyPrime replaced Tally.ERP 9, with redesigned navigation and the ability to multitask without opening a second instance. Old ERP 9 data can be migrated after a backup. Once migrated, though, it can’t be opened in ERP 9 again, so keep the untouched backup somewhere safe.

The desktop application runs on Windows 7 and above (64-bit). Mac users can still work in TallyPrime through TallyPrime Cloud Access, a separate paid service covered further down.

What you get with TallyPrime Silver

Tally states that every plan is fully loaded, so Silver includes the complete product. In practice that means the following.

  • Accounting and invoicing: vouchers, ledgers, bill-wise tracking of receivables and payables, several companies in one installation, and group companies for consolidated reports. Invoices can carry a logo, bank details, a payment QR code and a digital signature.
  • GST and e-documents: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B preparation, GSTR-2B reconciliation, e-invoicing and e-way bills. On supported releases you can file GSTR-1 from inside TallyPrime after authenticating.
  • Inventory: multiple godowns, stock transfers, batch and expiry tracking, sales and purchase orders, price levels for different customer types, and bills of materials for simple manufacturing.
  • Banking: bank statement import, automatic and manual reconciliation, cheque printing, and Connected Banking with supported banks.
  • Payroll and security: payroll sits inside the same product. You can set up separate user logins with security levels, encrypt company data with TallyVault, and switch on Edit Log to track changes to vouchers and masters.

Core work runs fully offline. The internet is needed for GST filing, e-invoicing, e-way bills and Connected Banking.

Several extras depend on an active TSS (Tally Software Services) subscription, which brings new releases, statutory updates and connected services. As of July 2026 Tally was promoting TallyPrime 7.1, and a few of its features, such as the new invoice templates and Amazon data import, need active TSS. Check Tally’s download page for whatever release is current when you read this.

Silver’s price doesn’t move with the number of invoices you raise or the amount of data you keep on the desktop. Tally doesn’t charge per transaction or for local data storage.

Extras are priced separately. TallyPrime Cloud Access starts at about ₹600 per user per month plus GST and needs a Silver or Gold licence underneath it. TallyDrive cloud backup is free up to 1 GB on a single-user licence with active TSS, and extra storage starts at ₹100 per month plus GST for 10 GB. The WhatsApp service renews at ₹1,300 a year plus GST, with message credits bought separately.

A worked example makes the table easier to use. Say a small trader buys the lifetime licence and works on one office PC. Year one costs ₹26,550 with GST, and TSS is already inside that. From year two, renewing TSS adds ₹5,310 a year. If the same trader also wants to check the books from a Mac at home through Cloud Access, that is a separate monthly line on top, and the Silver licence still has to exist underneath it.

You may still see ₹18,000 quoted for Silver on third-party pages. Tally’s own site currently lists ₹22,500, so treat that as the reference and ask any reseller for a written quote that matches it.

Lifetime or rental: which costs less?

Rental is cheaper at the start, and lifetime wins over time. The crossover comes later than most people expect.

Compare the 12-month rental at ₹8,100 with a lifetime licence where you renew TSS every year at ₹4,500. Before GST, the running totals look like this.

Year

Lifetime licence with yearly TSS

2

₹27,000

₹36,000

₹32,400

5

₹40,500

₹40,500

6

₹45,000

₹48,600

The two lines meet at ₹40,500 in year five, and from year six the lifetime licence is ahead. These figures assume today’s prices hold, and GST adds 18% to both sides equally. If you skip TSS renewals, lifetime costs still less, though you lose updates and connected services.

Rental suits a project with an end date, a new business that hasn’t settled yet, or a tight cash position. A lifetime licence suits a business that expects to run Tally for five years or more. Tally says rental customers can move to a lifetime licence later, with a price benefit that depends on the offer running at that time.

Two rental details are worth knowing. The 12-month prepaid key doesn’t renew automatically and expires after 12 months unless you renew it. Tally also states that the prepaid term isn’t refundable.

What if TSS lapses on a lifetime licence? TallyPrime keeps working and your data stays accessible. You stop receiving new releases, statutory updates and connected services until you renew. GST portal formats change often enough that most businesses filing returns through Tally keep TSS active.

What TSS covers and when renewal makes sense

TSS is the service subscription attached to a TallyPrime licence. Tally lists the following under it: free upgrades to major releases, statutory updates, connected services for GST, banking and WhatsApp, access to reports from anywhere, and online data sync. Active TSS also unlocks the free TallyDrive backup space mentioned above.

Whether to renew depends on how much of TallyPrime you use online. A sole proprietor who only prints invoices and keeps books offline can carry on without TSS for a while, since the licence keeps working. Someone who files GST returns, generates e-invoices or e-way bills, or imports bank statements through connected services will feel the gap quickly, because those services depend on staying current with the portals.

A middle path is the two-year renewal at ₹8,100 plus GST, which works out to ₹4,050 a year against ₹4,500 for the one-year option. If you already know you will keep filing through Tally, it saves a little and removes one reminder from your calendar.

The real question is how many people need Tally open at the same moment. Silver is used on one computer at a time. Gold is activated on a server system and shared with client computers on the same network.

Picture an owner who wants to check outstanding payments on a laptop while the accountant posts vouchers on the office PC. A single Silver licence can’t run both as working sessions. With active TSS, though, the owner can open reports through a browser, even from a phone, without a second licence. Browser reports are meant for viewing and downloading, not entering vouchers, so this covers the owner and not a second data-entry person.

If two people must enter data in the same hours, or branch counters share data over a LAN, Gold is the licence built for that. Ask Tally or an authorised partner before trying workarounds such as sharing one Silver licence over remote desktop. Licence terms apply, and a shortcut can turn into a compliance problem later.

Moving up is simple. Silver to Gold costs the price difference, and company data carries over because the data isn’t tied to the edition.

Who should buy Silver, and who should look elsewhere

Silver fits when one person does the accounting work, even if that person is the owner. A trader whose part-time accountant enters everything on one PC is a good match. So is a consultant who bills a handful of clients each month, or a CA who prepares one client’s books at a time.

Look at Gold if two or more people post entries during the same hours, or if several counters or branch offices need the same live data on a local network.

Look at Cloud Access, added on top of a Silver or Gold licence, if you work on a Mac, need the full application from several locations, or want to run it from a phone or tablet browser.

A quick test: count how many people will have TallyPrime open at 11 am on a busy day. One means Silver.

Audit trail rules for companies

Companies face one more check. The provision to Rule 3(1) of the Companies (Accounts) Rules, 2014 says that for financial years starting on or after 1 April 2023, a company using accounting software must use software that records an audit trail of every change and keeps that audit trail from being disabled. Auditors report on this under Rule 11(g) of the Companies (Audit and Auditors) Rules, 2014.

In standard TallyPrime, Edit Log is a setting that can be switched on or off. Tally also sells a TallyPrime Edit Log edition in which the log stays on permanently. A company should ask its chartered accountant which edition fits, and look at Tally’s pricing page for the Edit Log edition’s current price before buying standard Silver.

How to buy and activate TallyPrime Silver

  1. Try the 7-day free trial first, so you can test your own workflows before paying.
  2. Buy from the Tally Solutions website or an authorised Tally partner. Keep the invoice, serial number, activation key and registered email somewhere safe.
  3. Download the installer only from Tally’s official download page. Unofficial sites may host outdated or modified copies.
  4. Install it, open TallyPrime in administrator mode and choose Activate Licence. Enter the serial number, activation key and registered email or Tally.NET ID. Tally sends an unlock key to that email, and entering it finishes the activation.
  5. Create your company, enable GST if you need it, and take a first backup.

Register the licence with an email address your business will control for years. An outsourced accountant’s or reseller’s address is a poor choice, since password resets and TSS notices go there.

The first week after activation goes smoother if you keep the setup small. Turn on only the features the business uses, such as GST or inventory, since more can be enabled later. Enter a handful of real invoices and check the totals against your paper or Excel records before you migrate everything. Then set up scheduled backups. In TallyPrime 7.0 or later you can send backups to TallyDrive on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule, as long as the computer is switched on at the scheduled time.

To move the licence to a new computer, back up the data, surrender the licence on the old machine, install TallyPrime on the new one, reactivate, and then restore the data. If the old computer has died, reactivation can usually surrender the earlier activation automatically. If the software shows educational mode after you have activated, check Manage Licence and your internet connection first.

Mistakes to avoid when buying Silver

Buying Silver for a team is the most common one. Count simultaneous users, not total staff.

Letting TSS lapse and noticing late is another. The licence keeps working, but updates and connected services such as e-invoicing stop, and you can end up waiting on a renewal close to a filing date. Keeping backups on the same computer as the live data is risky, because one drive failure takes both. Copy backups to another device or to TallyDrive.

Downloading from unofficial sites, or buying from a seller who can’t show a licence registered to your business email, is a third trap. Confirm the partner’s identity before paying. Comparing quotes without checking GST also causes confusion. ₹22,500 and ₹26,550 can describe the same product, so ask whether the 18% is included.

FAQs

Can I install TallyPrime Silver on two computers?

The software can be installed on more than one computer, but the licence is used on one computer at a time. To switch machines, surrender the licence on the old one and reactivate it on the new one.

Does Silver have fewer features than Gold?

No. Tally says the core business features are the same. Gold costs more because it allows concurrent multi-user access on a local network.

Does TallyPrime Silver work without the internet?

Yes, for core accounting, invoicing and inventory work. GST filing, e-invoicing, e-way bills and Connected Banking need a connection.

Can I use Silver on a Mac or a phone?

The desktop application is built for Windows. Mac users and phone users can run the full application through TallyPrime Cloud Access, which is a separate subscription. Reports can also be viewed in a mobile browser.

Can I upgrade from Silver to Gold later?

Yes. You pay the difference, and your existing company data stays available.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Tally offers a 7-day free trial of the full product. Trial and educational modes have limits and are not meant for running a business.

Can the owner see reports from a phone if only one Silver licence exists?

Yes, with active TSS. Reports can be opened securely in a mobile browser for viewing and downloading. Entering vouchers from a phone needs Cloud Access.

Where should I buy it?

From the Tally Solutions website or an authorised Tally partner. Tally keeps a partner locator on its site, and it is worth confirming the partner’s identity and the registered email before you pay.

Will Silver stop working if I don’t renew TSS?

A lifetime licence keeps working without TSS, but you lose upgrades, statutory updates and connected services. A rental licence is different: the key expires at the end of the paid term unless you renew it.

Choosing TallyPrime Silver

Silver is a simple licence once you look past the edition names. If one person will work in Tally at a time, it gives you the whole product for ₹22,500 plus GST, or ₹750 a month plus GST if you would rather rent. If two people need to enter data at the same time, it is the wrong fit, and Gold or Cloud Access is where to look.

Three questions settle most decisions. How many people will have Tally open together on a normal working day? Do you expect to use it for five years or more, which tips the numbers toward a lifetime licence? And will you file GST returns or generate e-invoices through it, which makes an active TSS worth having from the start? Companies should add a fourth question for their chartered accountant, about Edit Log and the audit trail rule.

Prices and releases change, so spend a few minutes on Tally’s pricing page before you pay. The 7-day trial costs nothing, and a handful of real invoices entered during it will teach you more than any comparison table.

If you would like to talk the choice through with someone, you can get in touch with TallyMantra. Ask about Silver versus Gold, activation or renewals, and take your time deciding. There is no rush on your side.
